Headaches and Migraines Q & A
Can headaches be serious?
Headaches are a common condition presented in most chiropractic offices. However, recurring headaches can be the sign of something much more serious. Two of the more serious types of headaches are:
Migraines – usually accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and sound as common symptoms.
Tension headaches - pain on both sides of the head that may be associated with muscle pain.
Too many people who live with headaches and migraines are stuck thinking: "It runs in my family so I'm stuck with it" or "Just the 'normal' headaches and occasional migraines." This simply doesn't have to be! Chiropractic has helped thousands- even millions- of people get rid of their headaches and migraines and get back to living a life free of headaches.
What can a doctor of chiropractic do to help headaches and migraines?
Each patient is unique and has unique needs so treatment will vary. Chiropractors correct the musculoskeletal source of your headache through spinal manipulations and other therapies. Premier Chiropractic may employ one or more of the following to treat you for chronic headache pain:
Spinal manipulation - chiropractic adjustments are used to realign the spine, improve spinal function, and alleviate the stress on your system responsible for creating tension in the neck and head.
Corrective exercises – proper posture, exercises, and relaxation techniques can aid in relieving any recurring joint irritation or tension in the muscles of the neck and upper back.
Massage therapy - helps to improve blood circulation, decrease pain and inflammation, helps to relax the muscles, and makes you feel better.
What if I don’t have a headache when I come in?
It is common for patients to not present symptoms when they arrive for their appointment. However, because no pain is evident it doesn’t mean the underlying issue has gone away. Because there are many causes of headaches, with varying degrees of pain, they will often return if the direct problem is not addressed. Repeat visits are recommended to help retrain and strengthen the muscles supporting the spine and head.
