Does this sound familiar?
- Pain going up or down stairs
- An ache around or behind the kneecap
- Stiffness after sitting or first thing in the morning
- Swelling, clicking or a feeling that your knee might give way
- Pain during or after running, hiking or sports
What may be going on
Knee pain often comes from the tendons, cartilage and joint surfaces around the knee, whether from overuse, an old injury or gradual wear over time. Common examples include irritated tendons below the kneecap, pain around the kneecap, and arthritis.
How your hips, ankles and feet move matters too. If they aren’t doing their share, your knee can end up carrying more load than it should. That’s why we look beyond the knee itself.
When to get help right away
Get medical care right away if you have:
- A knee that’s hot, red and swollen, especially with a fever
- You can’t put weight on your leg after an injury
- A knee that looks out of place or is locked and won’t straighten
- Calf pain and swelling with warmth or redness
How we approach it
- 01
We listen first
Dr. Gentry starts with your story: when it began, what makes it better or worse, and what you’ve already tried.
- 02
A thorough evaluation
We look at how your knee, hip, ankle and foot move and share the load, and test strength and stability. If imaging would help, we’ll explain why and coordinate a referral.
- 03
A plan built around you
Your plan may combine several types of care. If your knee needs an orthopedic specialist, we’ll tell you honestly and help coordinate.
