Does this sound familiar?
- A dull ache or tightness across your low back
- Sharp pain when you bend, lift or twist
- Stiffness first thing in the morning or after sitting
- Pain that spreads into your hip or buttock
- Trouble standing up straight after sitting for a while
What may be going on
Most low back pain comes from the muscles, joints, discs and ligaments of the low back and pelvis being strained or not moving well. Common reasons include lifting, long hours of sitting, a stiff segment that makes the ones around it work harder, an irritated disc, or the sacroiliac joints where your spine meets your pelvis.
If your pain travels below the knee with tingling or numbness, a nerve may be involved. Our sciatica page explains more.

How we approach it
- 01
We listen first
Dr. Gentry starts with your story: when it began, what makes it better or worse, and what you’ve already tried.
- 02
A thorough evaluation
We test how your low back, pelvis and hips move, check strength and reflexes, and look for any nerve involvement. If imaging would help, we’ll explain why and coordinate it.
- 03
A plan built around you
Your plan may combine several types of care, plus simple changes to how you sit, lift and move. If something calls for a different specialist, we’ll tell you honestly.
