Does this sound familiar?
- Pain that travels from your low back or buttock down the back of your leg
- Burning, tingling or “electric” pain below the knee
- Numbness or weakness in your leg or foot
- Pain that’s worse when you sit, bend, cough or sneeze
- Symptoms on one side more than the other
What may be going on
Sciatica means the sciatic nerve, or one of the nerve roots in your low back that form it, is irritated. Common reasons include a disc that’s bulging or herniated, narrowing around the nerve as the spine ages, or tight, irritated muscles deep in the hip.
The irritation is usually in your back, even when you feel it most in your leg. That’s why finding the source matters more than chasing where it hurts.

How we approach it
- 01
We listen first
Dr. Gentry starts with your story: when it began, what makes it better or worse, and what you’ve already tried.
- 02
A thorough evaluation
Movement, strength, reflex and nerve tests help pinpoint where the irritation is likely coming from. If imaging like an MRI would help, we’ll explain why and coordinate a referral.
- 03
A plan built around you
Your plan may combine several types of care, and it changes as you do. If something calls for a different specialist, we’ll tell you honestly.
